Food Forest Work Party @ Kindness Farm

  • Kindness Farm 7101 Southeast 127th Avenue Portland, OR, 97236 United States (map)

Before the Summer Solstice Gifting Faire join us for a work party!

We will be working on expanding our food forest: building hugel beds and potentially planting some plants! Building hugel beds involves: turning sod, digging a swale, moving logs, using wheelbarrows, laying compost. The main project involves more physically laborious work (lifting, wheelbarrows, digging). We will have alternative activities available for any level of physical ability, and there's no need for any prior experience! Just come and have fun :-)

Important - Every volunteer who comes to the farm must register through our volunteer website prior to volunteering (ideally, prior to arrival at the farm). It just takes 3-5 minutes!

Time:

9am-12pm. You may show up whenever you are able, and please come and go as you please. However, we do start the day with stretching, and logistical info, so we do suggest to show up at 9am if possible if it is your first time to the farm.

PARKING & MEETING LOCATION:

KINDESS FARM

Please park on the farm side of the street anywhere up or down the street - lots of parking is usually available. Do NOT park on the grass across the street from the farm. This is important for safety vehicles to pass through. We reserve 2 driveway parking spots (in the gravel, on the right) for folks with accessibility needs.

You'll see a Kindness Farm sign by the mailbox. Walk to the back of the property, under the carport, and past the house (that's where the farm is!) until you see our hoop house and your shift leader!!

ABOUT THE FARM:

Kindness Farm is an immigrant, refugee & queer led 501c3 educational urban farm in SE Portland, Oregon. We cultivate equitable access to healthy produce, provide education on growing food, care for land using regenerative practices, and foster vibrant community. We center working with historically underserved and underrepresented communities: immigrants & refugees, LGBTQIIA2S+, people with low-incomes, unsheltered people, BIPOC, people with disabilities, youth & seniors.

In the last 3 years we’ve spent hundreds of hours teaching over 3,250 children, teens, adults, and seniors how to grow their own food in regenerative ways that battle climate change. In the process, we’ve engaged our community with over 20,000 volunteer hours, and as a by-product, we’ve grown healthy produce for over 69,000 meals & produce boxes to return to our neighbors and serve over 12,000 individuals experiencing food insecurity.

Volunteer groups both allow us to provide/exchange education in our community, and at the same time grow food for our neighbors in need!

Accessibility:

The farm's bathroom is not technically ADA accessible, but has been previously used by folks with wheelchairs. The majority of the farm itself is accessible, though not all parts are (we have some narrow pathways). Note that we use woodchips for the majority of our pathways.

What to Bring:

  • Water!

  • Weather / outdoor appropriate, warm, comfortable clothing and shoes you don't mind getting dirty. In the rainy season, the farm can be muddy, and sometimes it might also rain, so come prepared! Layers are great!

  • We recommend closed-toed shoes and long sleeve shirts.

  • Gardening gloves (though we have plenty at the farm if you don't have any!)

  • Kneepads (though we have many at the farm, too)

  • A snack or meal if you'd like!
