INTERSECTION PAINTING

Since 2000, neighbors of Portland’s historic Sunnyside neighborhood have come together every Spring to re-paint a huge sunflower mural at the intersection of SE 33rd & Yamhill, one block off Belmont Main Street. This was City Repair’s second project which aimed at repairing and reclaiming underutilized car-focused space, transforming it into a vibrant public space for people. Since its original sprouting, neighborhood volunteers have continued to pass down the tradition of coming together to organize the sunflower painting, build and maintain the kiosk, planter barrels, book exchange, art features, and gardens; sustaining this intersection as a space for art, expression, growth, and community building. Sunnyside Piazza has become a recognizable and iconic piece of not only the Sunnyside neighborhood, but of all Portland community art.
