Designing with Nature: permaculture and natural building

  • Global Homestead Garage and Shop People (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

City Repair hosts weekly workshops to build community capacity for over 50 sites around Portland to install community art, permaculture gardens, natural buildings, and villages for houseless folk. For the evening when we share about permaculture and natural building technologies we are opening the workshop open to the general public as well. Guest speakers working in the field will share what their work looks like in the Northwest, with the goal to teach the basics and inspire us to grow our design dreams.

This event is a lead up to the 18th annual Village Building Convergence in June where barn-raising projects will happen around the city. Learn more at www.cityrepair.org. For folks attending not in the placemaking program we ask that you pay a sliding scale donation. Food is provided and children are welcome. Contact Ridhi at vbcplacemaking@cityrepair.org for more info.

We encourage folk to RSVP through meetup: https://www.meetup.com/Portland-Permaculture-Meetup/events/247695022/

Hollywood Garden Mural

  • NE Hancock St. between NE 44th and 45th Aves (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

In 2016, over 100 volunteers came out to paint the Hollywood Garden Mural on NE Hancock Street between 44th and 45th - a block which hosts the Hollywood Farmers Market each Saturday. Taking its inspiration from the bountiful produce on display at the farmers market, the mural takes the form of a garden, with a path of stepping stones winding its way around fruits, vegetables and vines. This is one of the largest street paintings in Portland, stretching curb-to-curb along 100 feet of Hancock Street. On market day, it serves as a beautiful carpet for the farmers market, and throughout the week it leaves a reminder of the market on the street. Now that it's been a year (and a brutal winter), it's time to repaint the mural. Help us re-beautify this block of the Hollywood neighborhood

(Note that our rain date backup is July 23rd. Check Facebook page for announcements as we get closer to the date.) Painting: 10am to 5pm Kids activities: Coloring, Face Painting w/ Crista Wakefield, Hollywood Library storytime Food from Hotlips Pizza

Emerson Street Painting

Emerson Street Painting

NE 70th Ave. is a multi-use path that many neighborhood children use to access Scott Elementary. Our neighbors often use this path as a safe north-south alternative to busy NE 72nd Ave. for dog walking, running, and cycling.

Over the past several years, we have worked to make this path more welcoming for the Cully community. A community herb garden was constructed in 2014 with the support of a Cully Association of Neighbors mini-grant. The garden was recently expanded to include a raspberry patch, community free library, tiny benches and native plants.

An intersection painting project, designed by local families, will ensure that this space continues to be welcoming for all folks who live on Emerson Street and the Cully neighborhood in general. The design is a rainbow butterfly, which represents migration, diversity and inclusion. Monarch butterflies (representing Latino families) and bright blue butterflies (representing Somali families) will also be painted up the path.

We will be painting all day! Followed by a block party for Emerson Street and Cully neighborhood residents.

Lents Bridge Project

The Lents Community Footbridge links the two halves of the Lents Neighborhood which was unceremoniously bifurcated in the mid-eighties with the construction of the I-205 freeway. Our stair painting is the kick-off to a multi-year project to gather the community in beautifying this throughway, populated with schoolchildren, cyclists, wanderers, families, etc. Currently it is an uninspired piece of urban architecture, inviting litter and general abuse. We will imbue it with art and life as a reflection of the people it serves and inspires!

Join us to paint the panels to be installed on the risers of the west-side access stairs! We will have a beautiful shady work area on the grassy side of the I-205 Multi-Use path stocked with coffee and pastries in the morning and vegetarian chili and cold drinks as we paint into the afternoon. In addition, we will be COVERING the walls of the bridge with sidewalk chalk--a perfect activity for kids (and adults) to start the process of claiming our community space!

Jeans Farm

Jean’s Farm is a magical oasis of a farm, edged by forest and a creek, inside the city! This site hosts educational programs for children, permaculture workshops, training and tours for adults, and a vegetable CSA.

For this year’s VBC, we plan to build two structures that will nearly complete a 5-year infrastructure improvement process. A new kitchen counter will be built underneath the roof made during last year’s VBC, and a Japanese torii gateway will be completed and installed that we began preparations on last year.

Jean’s Farm will host a number of guests and delegations from Japan and the theme of cross-cultural exchange will be prominent throughout the events. Check our schedule for details on what we’re planning!

***please note: THERE IS NO VEHICLE ACCESS TO THE FARM. Street address is for walk-ins only. No parking or stopping at gated address. No exceptions. Cars should park on SE 36th Ave and walk to the entrance. We strongly encourage coming by bike or by public transportation. Bus #34 and #75 both stop very close to this location (Stop ID: 3083).

***Please arrive quietly to be respectful of neighbors and say hi to Steve, the landowner, if you see him. Also, because site hosts educational programs, please only visit during specified project and event times. Do not attempt to access the site from any way other than the one specified here. Thank you!!

We are looking for fabulous people to create lunch for all the volunteers - hopefully working with what’s growing on the Farm :) Or people who can source food donations to feed the volunteers :)
