Repaint Gilbert/Sedro Intersection!

Help our project by donating to our GoFundMe!

Hi! My name is Casey and I live here at the intersection of N Gilbert and Sedro in St John's. Along with a few other homes in the neighborhood, we are planning to continue the tradition of hosting a block party for everyone living on & around these two streets each summer. While discussing what we should do, the topic of repainting the tree at the intersection of the two streets came up.

The original painting was coordinated by Tony & Lynda Zagelow as part of a neighborhood effort in 2012, but it's starting to look a little worn. This summer seems like a great time to come together as a neighborhood and freshen it up with a new coat of paint, along with adding some new touches to the design. We'd love you all to come join us in that, after which we can spend some time enjoying some food and drinks together as neighbors.

In order to accomplish this repainting, we'll need to buy some new paint—a particular kind that will stand up to weather and traffic, as well as mixed in approved colors that the city doesn't have any conflicts with in terms of traffic signaling. We'll also need to rent some barricades to block off traffic and make a safe space for everyone to join in on the painting. We've estimated the costs at $500 between the barricade rental and the paint. We're hoping that some people can pitch in to help us cover these costs; if we have any money left over we can put it towards food and drinks for the block party.

Repainting will give us a daily visual reminder of the excitement we feel to be able to live here in St. John's but it's also a great opportunity to meet each other and give our families a new memory of our time here. We hope you'll join us even if you aren't able or interested in contributing money to the painting fundraiser! The block party will be happening at the intersection of the two streets on August 12th starting at 9am and continuing on into the day.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask any questions on the Facebook group  or contact me through this page.

This year we are repainting our two intersection paintings on NE 85th (Beech and Milton) for the fourth time - after a year off in 2017. We've been fortunate to partner with Central Northeast Neighbors Coalition to translate flyers and provide interpretation services for the event into Vietnamese to reach more neighbors and increase participation. Outreach for new planter boxes and signage on 85th street funded by the Portland In The Streets Community grant will also now include Vietnamese and Spanish translations. We are also working with Madison High School students to assess our success with putting on an inclusive event.

We are brightening and beautifying our streets to bring awareness to all that the people who live here use the streets to play, ride bikes, walk to the school bus, play ball games, and more.  The many children who live here would like to feel safe and joyful while using the street space.  Our project is aligned with the Hazelwood Neighborhood Plan: to assure a safe neighborhood that provides vitality of experience and quality of life by enhancing the appearance and functionality of the environment while promoting pedestrian and non-motorized vehicles through Hazelwood.

*Lunch will be provided! We will be painting the intersection as well as building benches, a Tiny Free Library, and sandwich board "Slow for Kid" signs among other hands-on activities for all! Be ready for some fun :)

June 9th: Come on over to the Goat Haus to cook Nixtamal (pronounced neeks-ta-mal) tortillas! Nixtamal is the age-old practice of making hand ground tortillas with wood ash and heritage-grown corn. We'll explore the old traditions, stories, fables and images from this ancient practice. Then we will be cooking, hand-grinding, and making griddled tortillas from home grown corn*. We'll end the workshop with tasty totrillas and sharing stories of growing corn... we may even have some seed to share! This event will also be led by Julian Dominic.
*Some of our corn will be from our friends over at Three Sisters Nixtamal (our local tortilleria).

Come help Depave and partners launch the transformation of an over-paved park in a residential neighborhood in Oregon City by ripping up around 4000 square feet of asphalt. Once Oregon City’s first municipal swimming pool, the park is now paved over and the focus of a local reinvestment effort.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome! We typically have activities for young stewards to be involved in depaving, but parents are responsible for attending to their children. Unaccompanied minors, please email us in advance about a parent/guardian’s signature.

Depave will provide all the necessary tools, gloves, safety gear, and our partners will provide coffee, breakfast snacks, and lunch.

We’ll be starting at 10am and working until about 2pm. Volunteers are encouraged to come early – orientation is at 9:45. However, all are welcome to come at any time during the day and stay for as long/short as desired.

Due to the physical nature of the work planned, volunteers are encouraged to wear clothing appropriate for tough work. Closed-toed shoes and long pants are required to depave – NO EXCEPTIONS.

Recirculating Shower: Design + Build

Recirculating Shower: Design + Build: Help design and build the most sustainable shower you could ever take! We are building a recirculating shower system that can be used in villages for the houseless, such as Hazelnut Groove, Right 2 Dream Too, and Dignity Village. The vision is to develop net-zero technology to support villages for the houseless. The current design is a prototype and this build will help inform and perfect the design. Bring your skills and dreams!

The Village Coalition is a network of advocates, activists, and houseless villages and individuals committed to combating homelessness from many sides of the issue - from designing villages and sleeping pods, to changing negative perspectives, to finding land, and partnering with organizations to facilitate safe shelter creation.
